Part One
Part one of the book consists of six chapters. It begins with Martin, the main character, being expelled from school for fighting. He is sent to a new school where he struggles to fit in and make friends. Martin's father is abusive, and his mother is unable to protect him. Martin turns to his grandmother for help, and she encourages him to pursue his passion for music. Part three of the book consists of four chapters. It begins with Martin and his band embarking on a tour of the United States. They encounter many challenges on the road, including drug addiction, racism, and violence. In chapter two, Martin's band is invited to play at a concert in South Africa. Martin is hesitant to go because of the country's apartheid policies, but he ultimately decides to go and play the concert. The experience changes Martin's perspective on race and politics. The book ends with Martin returning to London and reflecting on his journey. He realizes that he has grown and changed over the course of the book, and he is grateful for the experiences he has had.
